ery four years, a house in the

Police Reserve area of Diphu

transforms into something

different altogether. Flags go

up, a large screen comes out,

and football fans from across

the region converge on what

its owner has simply named

‘German Stadium’.

With the 2026 FIFA World

Cup less than a week away,

65-year-old Putul Borah is

giving the final touches to

what has become a well-

known ritual in Diphu.

“I’m so excited and look-

ing forward to June 11. The

preparations have been al-

most completed and I’m just

giving the finishing touches,”

Borah told The Assam Trib-

une over phone.

A self-confessed German

football devotee, Borah

named his house and its at-

tached auditorium ‘German

Stadium’ after completing

construction in 2018.

Though reports of large-scale

corruption in the Assam Leg-

islative Assembly in the last

five years hogged media head-

lines, Speaker Ranjeet Ku-

mar Dass said that no one has

come to him with any com-

plaint in this regard.

Dass, however, admitted

that he is aware of irregulari-

ties in promotions, illegal ex-

tension of services and ap-

pointments, and that steps are

being taken in this regard.

The Speaker told The As-

sam Tribune that he has only

seen the allegations in the

media. Till date, no one has

lodged complaints before him

over the alleged corruption. If

someone comes forward with

evidence of corruption, he

would definitely look into it.

Dass said that as soon as

he took over as Speaker, he

came to know that the Sec-

retary of the Assembly had

been given an extension ille-

gally. As per law, the Secre-

tary can be given extension

for two years. But the two

years had already passed, and

that is why the Secretary was

released from service on the

last day of the first session of

the current Assembly.

The Speaker said that some

persons were appointed on

contract basis without require-

ment and rules were not fol-

lowed during the appoint-

ments. That is why those peo-

ple have been released from

service. He further admitted

that there were irregularities

in promotions, and that issue

is being looked into.

On what steps are being

taken to prevent such irreg-

ularities, Dass said the issue

would be discussed soon.

of the Economic Advisory

Council (EAC) various

measures to further boost

India’s economic growth

amid global turmoil.

The members of the EAC

to the Prime Minister (EAC-

PM) also gave their assess-

ment of the impact of the con-

flict in West Asia on India and

the world.

“Chaired a meeting of the

Economic Advisory Council

to the Prime Minister. De-

liberated on a wide range of

issues relating to India’s eco-

nomic transformation and

long-term development pri-

orities.

“Also shared perspectives

on adding more momentum

to the reforms journey and

ensuring ‘Ease of Living’ as

well as ‘Ease of Doing Busi-

ness’,” PM Modi said in a

post on X.

The Prime Minister and

the EAC members dis-

cussed various ideas and

measures to further boost

India’s economic growth in

times of global turmoil,

sources said.

Various reforms to im-

prove ease of living and ease

of doing business were also

discussed at the high-level

meeting, they said.

The EAC is an indepen-

dent body that gives advice

to the Government of India,

specifically to the Prime Min-

ister, on economic and relat-

ed issues.

Two principal secretaries

to the Prime Minister – PK

Mishra and Shaktikanta Das

– attended the meeting, be-

sides the members of the

EAC.

At present, the EAC com-

prises the chairman, three

full-time members and 11

part-time members.

S Mahendra Dev is the

chairman, while full-time

members are Sanjay Kumar

Mishra, Sanjeev Sanyal and

Shamika Ravi.

There are 11 part-time

members: Rakesh Mohan,

Sajjid Z Chinoy, Neelkanth

Mishra, Nilesh Shah, TT

Ram Mohan, Soumya Kanti

Ghosh, KV Raju, Chetan

Ghate, Pami Dua, Pulak

Ghosh and Gaurav Vallabh.

The terms of reference of

EAC include analysing any

issue, economic or other-

wise, referred to it by the

Prime Minister, and advis-

ing him thereon, addressing

issues of macroeconomic

importance and presenting

views thereon to the PM.

These could be either

suo-motu or on reference

from the Prime Minister or

anyone else. They also in-

clude attending to any oth-

er task as may be desired

by the PM from time to

Birth anniversary of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi observed

apriya Gopinath Bordoloi In-

ternational Airport (LGBI

Airport) on Saturday ob-

served the birth anniversa-

ry of Lokapriya Gopinath

Bardoloi, the first Chief Min-

ister of Assam and a vision-

ary leader whose contribu-

tions continue to inspire

generations.

The programme com-

menced with the lighting of

the ceremonial lamp and of-

fering of floral tributes be-

fore the statue of Bardoloi

by Chief Airport Officer

Mukesh Nankani, along

with officials of Guwahati

International Airport Limit-

ed (GIAL) and the Central

Industrial Security Force

(CISF).

As part of the observ-

ance, passengers at the ter-

minal were invited to offer

floral tributes to the iconic

leader. The terminal team

also distributed saplings to

passengers to mark the oc-

casion and celebrate the

legacy of the Bharat Ratna

awardee.

“The annual observance

reflects LGBI Airport’s com-

mitment to honouring the

life and contributions of the

leader after whom the air-

port is named. The airport’s

new integrated terminal, in-

spired by the culture,

craftsmanship and natural

beauty of Assam, serves as

a modern gateway to North-

east India. With its blend of

regional identity, digital in-

novation and passenger-

centric facilities, the termi-

nal reflects the aspirations

of a progressive Assam

while preserving its rich

heritage. Through such ini-

tiatives, the airport contin-

ues to celebrate and pre-

serve the legacy of Lokapri-

ya Gopinath Bardoloi,” an

airport spokesperson said.

ed the 136th birth anniver-

sary of Bharatratna Loka-

priya Gopinath Bardodoi at

the Kalaguru Bishnu Pras-

ad Rabha Auditorium in Cot-

ton University on Saturday.

DrDhrubajyoti Borah, ex-

president of Asam Sahitya

Sabha, was invited as chief

guest and Ajoy Dutta gave

the keynote speech.

“Whenever there was a

need, the tribal communi-

ties of Assam have always

risen up to defend Assam.

Bardoloi was the progenitor

in that regard, as through

his efforts, the tribal move-

ments started coming into

prominence,” Dhrubajyoti

Borah said.

Terming him as the La-

chit Barphukan of the mod-

ern era, Ajoy Dutta said,

“His contribution to the

freedom movement of India

is of paramount importance.

Moreover, his role in pre-

venting Assam from becom-

ing a part of East Pakistan

can be considered as his

greatest gift to us.”

“He did not fill our hearts

with the national fervour

alone, he also gave us, with

his painstaking efforts, insti-

tutions such the Gauhati

High Court and our prestig-

ious Gauhati University,”

he added.
