EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
AIS
BUSINESS DESCRIPTION:
Purpose, mission and long-term vision:
The ultimate result business is working to achieve is to provide safe, affordable,
reliable and, most of all, sustainable transportation and to promote responsible
consumption of resources when providing our transportation services. We plan
to do so by introducing and boosting the demand for hybrid minibus taxis to
transport the millions of South Africans that commute by means of this mode of
transport daily. Business aims to maintain efficiency in every business practice,
specifically regarding our employees, customer experiencing unpredictable and
unstructured waiting periods and the environment. In the foreseeable future,
Business hopes to expand our target market to include that part of our society
who have access to vehicles and e-hailing services but would prefer Business.
Initially, our target market consists existing taxi users, specifically our lower
income customers who are more price sensitive. As Business expands, middle
income customers that face less economic constraint are responsive to non-
price aspects such as technological integration, dependability and our
environmental care.
To avoid internal conflict, we will implement a clear contractual agreement with
drivers to ensure that business and taxi drivers understand what’s regarded as
misconduct on our side and their side as well as what the consequences entail if
the contract is breached.
Minibus taxis in the industry usually range from R10 to R20 for short trips and R15
to R20 for medium trips (~25km) which is what business will focus on during the
start-up operating years. Due to increases in fuel prices, many associations will
implement a R5 to R6 price rise. Because business does not completely depend
on fuel, we will keep our affordable prices of R10 for short distances and R15 for
medium distances.
Our mobile tracking and booking application improve reliability by enabling
commuters to view where along the route the taxi is in real time.
Sustainability and prioritising customer satisfaction are large components of
business that differentiate us from the rest of the industry in which we operate.
Hybrid minibus taxis maximise profits due to low fuel costs and preserve a
healthy atmosphere. Business encapsulates the importance of SDG 7:
Affordable, Reliable, Sustainable and modern energy for All.
History of business:
Seeing that global conflict is causing a spike in fuel prices, all common
transportation providers such as Uber, buses, or that part of the public that
transport themselves, will negatively encounter the consequences of the
increases when travelling from A to B.
Another gap in the market was spotted when our team identified the hierarchy in
the minibus taxi industry. Taxi associations possess the most power, drivers'
possess less and commuters, although this organisation largely depends on
them, possess the least. Business acknowledges we cannot replace
transportation network companies like Bolt, nor is that our desire, we aim to
place more control and knowledge in the consumer’s hands. These two major
gaps in the market created an opportunity for sustainable growth in the minibus
taxi industry and for taxi commuters to discover a transportation manner that is
safe and reliable.
Background to the taxi industry:
The minibus taxi sector was founded by black South Africans in the 1930s and
persistently serves those who have been formerly excluded. Minibus taxis
functioned illegally because permits were challenging to acquire due to harsh
Apartheid laws enforced. Simultaneously, rail and bus transport were not
efficient. Eventually, the government allowed permits to be granted. The industry
grew exponentially and is one of the first of which black people secured
economic influence and capital. The democratic state attempted twice to
formalise this sector so that brutal disputes between taxi associations end, and
security and profitability improves, which failed because of absence of
cooperation by taxi drivers/associations.
Business Case Rationale:
Business is an innovative and renewable mixture of the minibus taxi industry and
the e-hailing service industry. While e-hailing places complete control in the
hands of the commuter, the high prices do not cater for the lower to middle class
that need to commute daily. Especially when prices surge so drastically during
peak time. Business is the most suitable manner for customers to track their
transport with the use of our mobile app and still pay the minimum transport
services. Excess solar energy will be fed back into the Eskom grid to generate
more income from an auxiliary business practice and more importantly, to give
back to our community.
