including a notable earthquake, tsunami, landslide, wildfire, and flood.
Earthquake
● Name: Tohoku Earthquake
● Epicenter Location: The Pacific Ocean, 72 km east of the Oshika Peninsula of the Tōhoku region.
● Year: 2011
● Magnitude: (mw) 9.1
● Damage Description: damaged more than 123,000 houses and almost a million more, and $220- $235
billion USD in damages
○ For example, lives lost, value of property damage in dollars, changes in landscape, days power was out,
types of property damaged, etc.

● Why do you think it was so destructive, and what could we (humans) have done to be better prepared for
it?
○ Answer: I think it was so disruptive because of the tsunami that came with it and all of the
humongous waves it brought. We as humans could have probably set up flights to board people
out of the country or that state, also, we could have put in better exit ways throughout the
buildings to ensure people could get out quicker.
Tsunami
● Location: Indian Ocean
● Year: 2004
● Cause: A massive earthquake off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia
● Number of Deaths: 227,898
● Height of wave: 51 meters (167 feet)

● Why do you think it was so destructive and what could we have done to be better prepared for it?
○ Answer: I think it was disruptive because of the strength of the wave and how hard and fast it
came. There’s not much you can do to prepare for a tsunami, but they could have sent people out
of that state because they had to of known there was a tsunami coming
Landslide
● Location: Haiyuan Landslides
● Year: 1920
● Cause: an earthquake caused it
● Damage description: burying towns, collapsing homes and structures, and changing river courses.

● Why do you think it was so destructive, and what could we have done to be better prepared for it?
○ Answer: It brought things down with it when it came, and people probably could have locked
their things up in safes and boxes that would keep it stable
Wildfire
● Location: Wisconsin
● Year: 1871
● Cause: drought, high winds, and logging debris
● Damage description: more than 1,200 deaths, destroying the town of Peshtigo and 16 other
communities, and burning over 1.2 million acres of land
