AP ART SUMMER HOMEWORK
Welcome to AP 2D Art and Design / AP Drawing!
AP Art is a self directed process that involves a lot of independent work revolving around an
idea that you will investigate through sketches, experimentation and the creation of artworks to
build your art portfolio. My expectation for AP Art students is that they have the maturity to be in
control of their self directed artwork creation, have good planning skills, and show
professionalism.
Your summer homework will be: 1.Make a mental map of potential ideas from which you will
choose an idea for your AP Art sustained investigation. 2.Answer the questions on the
Brainstorming Topic Questions and Resources Worksheet. 3.Create one artwork.
These assignments are due before the start of the school year. You will turn in these three
assignments on the second day of class after you join the Google Classroom. Don’t wait until
the first day of school to complete these assignments because there won’t be time to work on
them during class and they won’t show professionalism if done in such a short time.
1. To start your homework you need to create a list of ideas. Create a mental map, with you in
the center, of ideas you are interested in working on during AP Art. These must be things you
find interesting, are personal to you, you are intrigued or you feel very passionate about.
Use the following link to read about the process of brainstorming and how to generate ideas for
art making. Watch the video “Brainstorming for Artists” to better understand the process of
creating a mental map.
After reading the information on the link and watching the video, make your own mental map of
topics.

2.Choose the strongest idea from your mental map, or the idea you feel more interested in using
to create artworks for your sustained investigation, and answer the questions, with full
sentences, in the Brainstorming Topic Questions and Resources Worksheet:
