Claude McKay’s “If We Must Die” is a defiant Shakespearean sonnet (ABAB CDCD EFEF GG) written in 1919 as a response to Red Summer mob violence against Black Americans. It urges resisting oppression with dignity and honor rather than submitting passively to “mad and hungry dogs”.
