booksthatdealwithsuchheavytopics.Iwroteitforpeoplelikeme!Iknew
therewasnobetterwaytogetmetopickupabookthanwiththechallenge:
“Trustme,youwon’tbeabletoputitdown.”SoIwroteitasasuspense
novel.
Itwasanovelthatoftenfeltlikethirteenshortstories,allconnected,which
allowedmetoexploreseveralseriousissuesthroughoneperson’s
perspective.Hannahsays,atonepoint,thatyounevertrulyknowwhatgoes
oninanyone’slifebutyourown.Becauseofthat,youcan’tfullyanticipate
howthey’llrespondtosomethingyoudoorsay—goodorbad.Andwehear
thatallthetime.“IfIhadknownwhatelsetheyweredealingwith...”ButI
alsowantedpeopletorecognizewhereHannahcould’vedonemoretohelp
herself,andthat’swhyClay’shalfoftheconversationisessential.
Clay,ashelistenstothetapes,representsthereader.Iwantedhimtoshow
angerwherethereaderwouldprobablyfeelangry,orbesadwheretheyfelt
sad,orbeuncomfortable,orsometimesjustlaughalongwithHannah.Clay’s
storywashardertowritebecauseIhadtokeephishalfofthestoryinteresting
comparedtoHannah’sdramatictale,whichwasbeingtoldsimultaneously.
Butwhilehisstorywasdifficult,thecharacterwaseasybecausemostofhis
reactionssimplymirroredmineasIaddedhisthoughtsoverHannah’s
narration.
AfterIdevelopedthe“reasons”Hannahwoulddescribe,Icameupwith
characterswhocouldbringaboutthosesituations.Theorderoftheirstories
mostlyconcernedincreasingthetension,lettingmyselfdiscoverhoweach
storyledtothenextasIwrote.Thatway,itwassuspensefulforme,too!
(Mostly,though,it’sbecauseIdon’tliketooutline.)
ThepublicationofThirteenReasonsWhycoincidedwithschoolsre-
evaluatingtheirroleinstudentsafety,bothphysicallyandemotionally.
Slowlyrecognizingthereachandinfluenceofsocialmedia,whichwasonly
startingtoemergeasIwrotethebook,adultsbegantoseethattheteenyears
wereincreasinglycomplex.Nomatterhowcomplextechnologymakesour
relationships,though,everygenerationwillstillwant—anddeserve—respect.
That’sonereasonIkeptcertaintechnologiesoutofthisbook,andinstead
focusedonstoriesthatwouldwithstandmanymoreyearsofourworld
growingevenmorecomplicated.
Morethanever,weneedtodiscussthewaywetreateachother—and
ourselves—andmakethosediscussionsroutine.Books,asyouknow,area
wonderfulwaytodothat.Peoplecanuseapieceoffictiontoopena
